The deep purple pegasus had been back to the islands for some time now. Long enough to discover what had happened to his birthplace after his abrupt departure, to re-settle on the islands, and to even begin another family. He had been back long enough to find something that filled the hole in his heart that he hadn’t realized was there. He had been incredibly lucky; he knew it deep down in his bones. He had found a mare that was kind and loyal to him, who had even given him children. Twins. How he loved to watch them play together, now that they had begun to fly. His heart swelled in pride to watch his brightly colored children take to the sky.
He had dawdled, though. Dolie giving birth to Rika and Vakasa had distracted him from his goal, though it was a distraction worth the wait. He would have continued to push off the inevitable, if it weren’t for the fact he knew his children deserved a more permanent home rather than to be forced to live in Hihiri much longer. Dolie deserved a more permanent home, too. His family deserved the things he could not give to his first family many years ago – and he was determined to achieve it. He did not have to go far, this time. He knew the ancient laws of their islands. Any fight had to be dealt with here, on Hihiri. He made sure to separate himself from his family far enough so they would not be forced to watch what was to occur. His children were too young, too innocent to discover how the world worked by watching their own father battle for Tangaroa. It was easier to leave the jungle environment of the island all together, and make his way to Whaka-Ma Pass instead.
This time, however, he chose to walk. It was better to walk, to further hide his location from his family. He did not doubt the twins’ ability to find him, nor their curiosity over what he was up to. With each step, he could feel the old rush of anger and hurt returning to him, now that he was facing destiny. It would end today. His wings did not curl against his sides, as they would have done in most situations. They remained loose, dragging through the shallow water of the pass as he pranced. He was jittery, and for a good reason. With a great breath, he bellowed out his challenge. His wings, which had been idle, ruffled themselves and drew up, much like a bird would do when threatened or angered. He had come for a great deal of things, and he was not going to let himself be disappointed. With a silent prayer, he hoped he would not disappoint his family, either.
