Thread has been gone for more than a hundred and fifty years. For a short while, life on Pern was idyllic - the people, no longer forced to cower in Holds, spread across the land and claimed the land they couldn't claim under Thread. White, and later gray and black dragons became commonplace. Pern, Weyr and Hold alike, thrived.
But peace doesn't last forever. The dragons, designed by Kitti Ping to compensate for heavy losses to Thread, grew too numerous for Pern to sustain. Weyrs became burdens, and the situation grew worse year by year - until the Holds began considering cutting the Weyrs off entirely and leaving the dragonmen to fend for themselves.
The riders grew desperate and frantic. They were looking for a solution. Those at Landing, with access to the transcribed information from AIVAS' databases, considered the impossible - a jump between to another planet. The original colonists left records of an unnamed world they have considered for settlement, but deemed a worse fit for their needs than Pern. The most intact of the images - that of a rocky, desolate landscape - was chosen as a destination for six whiteriders who volunteered for the mission.
Six riders jumped, and only one returned - T'dore of Rusveth. His story - that of a dry alien world teeming with dangerous creatures - was too outlandish to believe, but Rusveth's mental images of the place were precise enough for other dragons to between to the planet.
With the discovery of the planet - dubbed by the Pernese New Igen - came the solution. The New Igen Initiative, headed by T'dore, was a project designed to begin settlement of this new world. The Weyrs, too afraid to sacrifices their golds and bronzes for such a dangerous undertaking, sent the chromatic dragons instead.
Shortly after the discovery of the planets, one of the survey parties scoping out locations for a new Weyr and Hold found large deposists of coal and iron ore - materials Pern desperately needed. So fifty-three years ago, the first Weyr and Hold of New Igen - Howling Rock Weyr and Howling Rock Hold - were officially established. And to this day, the riders, wherhandlers, and holders of Howling Rock persevere against all odds.
