There is a tale that originated long ago, far before any living minds can remember. For many it was a myth but, for a precious few, it was sacred. Passed down the generations, the legend spoke of how a large rock from somewhere beyond the sky catapulted toward our land and how when it hit the earth shook in pain. For days the earth trembled in a fever until it suddenly stopped. However, the damage had already been done. Lives were lost in the quakes and grief for our land's pain struck our hearts.
But, despite the gaping hole that the space rock had ripped into our Homeland, things went back to normal. Life continued.
The legend speaks of how, over the years, the rain and melting snow of passing seasons slowly filled up the giant crater until it became our precious Lake Vesta, the lake which has saved our Homeland from droughts too many times to count. And, with the passing of time, many forgot about the tale of the space rock and the story of how Lake Vesta came to be.
Until recently.
It all began long before anyone ever truly noticed. The amphibians were the first ones to show the signs, as well as the fish. Two headed salamanders and three-legged frogs became a sight so common that it became normal. Fish were harder to see but, when they were, they were far more unusual than their half-terrestrial brothers: long teeth, extended spines, and bright colors slowly began to rise from the depths, revealing to us the secret of how they had come to be...
For years we have populated this land and for years we have drank of the refreshing waters of Lake Vesta. Yet no one ever expected the strange anomalies of the fish to become our own...
They have.
