The sand was hot now, with summer just around the corner and the sun just beginning to evaporate over the evening horizon. A beautiful color took the land at this time. The rich read clay color was illuminated by the sun's russet red as it slowly bled to death each night. Vitani watched, her body gently laid in the cool sand of the shady Gorge. She'd been born here six short years ago. Her mother, the slightly insane mare of the north, had also birthed Nkulu in the safety of the Gorge not but a year before. It was a safe haven when things went bad, and a place where Vitani could escape her brother's watchful eyes for a while. She enjoyed her time alone, thinking as her mother had, probably in the very spot she lay currently.
Nuka, the brute, was a kind brother, but Vitani feared his intentions weren't as sharp as they should be. She knew tenderness had begun to take over her brothers big heart, softening him to nearly the point of no return. The white marked mare had to keep a close eye on all those mare's looking to escape into the warm places of Nuka's heart. She would never lose him, but the thought of sharing when she knew something, something so big was destined for them, was a scary thought.
Zira, the neurotic mare from the north, told her day in and day out through her childhood. You are destined, my children, destined for great things. Things that will be hard, yet fruitful in your winnings. The mare's oddly colorful voice still rang through Vitani's ears. The warm feeling of her rasping tongue still moved over her ears. Vitani thought silently about this destiny that was hers, starring out to the vanishing sun.
