Dolie knew herself to not be alone. She was not the only pegasus... Well, perhaps on the islands, but surely not on the mainlands either. No, Dolie could feel that she was not so unusual. She did know that she was blessed with wings resembling those of a seabird and thus, she could swim rather easily. She wasn't what some would call "avid", but Dolie wasn't new to the water, either. After all, how could one be of the islands and be unfamiliar with the element?
The young mare found herself enveloped with water today as she soaked in the waterfall's outlet. Tukutuku was a beautiful land - in fact it was the site of her birth. Dolie couldn't remember her mother... All she could think of was the beauty that surrounded her when she first opened her eyes - the waterfall in particular. The mare's wings lifted slightly, extending just a little from their rested position, hovering just so above the water's surface in a small stretching motion. The mare's black muzzle lowered to take a drink of the sparkling water she stood in, grateful to have such a wonderful place to call home. She'd grown up in Tangaroa, but Tukutuku would always have a special place in her heart.

In fact, it had been such a short period of time that the mere thought of being home made him giddy still. While there was still a great heaviness on his heart, it could not weigh down his springy steps nor keep him from humming a soothing tune. The birds flitted around, singing happily along with him, which helped brighten his mood. Many of the bright and colorful tropical birds swooped down to greet him cheerfully like he was an old friend. For the adult birds, he was; he had only been gone for a year, after all. His bright coat and feathered wings nearly made him kin to the bright birds, anyways.
He let his hooves lead him across the island since his return. He was weary from his travel, but he did not want to rest until he reached a certain destination. It was a special place in his heart, just as it was for any other Islander, he was certain of it. The place was revered by the natives for its beauty and safety, among its other properties. As the deep violet colored stallion parted the green foliage, his amber colored eyes finally rested and the familiar sight of the waterfall. With a tired smile, the stallion pushed forward before his vision was disturbed by another form. The figure was a bright colored mare that had wings like himself, resting in the cool clear water that the waterfall ran into. He paused, uncertain at first, before pressing onwards cautiously. “Good afternoon, miss,” he greeted, his gravelly voice warm, despite its weariness. His own wings, that bore various colors, extended slightly as if they were stretching, before settling themselves at his sides once more. “It is a lovely day, no?” he asked, attempting to form a polite conversation. It was never said that Mako was a rude stallion, after all.

As Dolie allowed the cool waters to soak into her coat, she pulled her wings out, extending them on top of the water, just barely skimming its surface. What water did fall on the top of her huge, coral and black wings beaded up quickly and ran right back down into the water. Dolie heard another; who else could be here? This was her sacred place!
Standing just deep enough that the water surrounded her barrel, Dolie slowly turned to face the other equine, her blond eyes widening at the sight she beheld. It was another pegasus! Immediately a large smile showed on her face and a high-pitched whinny erupted from her throat as she tossed her head a little, prancing in place in the water for a moment before folding in her wings to her sides and regaining her calm demeanor.
"It is!" she agreed. She took steps closer to him, but just enough to get a better look at his plumage. "Are you new to the islands?" she asked slowly, tilting her head far to the side, her mane falling into the drink.

On top of that, he remained some distance away from it. He didn’t want the small mare to feel uncomfortable by his presence, though it seemed quite the opposite if it. Once she realized his was like her, she seemed rather pleased to see him. She greeted him with a smile and a whinny, fidgeting in the water for a moment before recollecting herself.
He couldn’t help but respond with his own deep whinny and a sheepish smile. Perhaps he had been rude, for assuming she had wanted company. She appeared to be displeased at first, before realizing what he was. However, he pushed the thought aside as she spoke, moving closer for a better look. The stallion chuckled, shaking his head so strands of his sandy blonde forelock fell across his face. “No, miss, I was born and raised here. On Tangaroa, in fact,” he replied honestly. He did not like to lie, unless it was absolutely necessary. “I have just returned to the islands after spending a year on the mainland. I missed the tropical beauty of the islands too terribly to stay away any longer,” he continued, pausing briefly before picking right back up. “My name is Mako. May I have the pleasure of knowing yours?”

Something drew her to him. Was it their common species? It had to be. She hadn't ever met another pegasus and one as tall and noble as this stallion was sure to entrance her. Her glassy blond eyes fixed on his display, Dolie took a few steps closer until they were close enough to speak comfortably.
The stranger explained himself easily. How could they have been raised there and not known each other? She supposed it might have something to do with her young age. Dolie hadn't been all the alert as a filly. Perhaps he'd seen her, but she could safely say she'd never seen him. "It's Dolie," she said sweetly with a smile. Her voice was never sour; she was a happy girl.
"Forgive me, but your colors are beautiful."

How could it? The young mare was very pleasant to be around, and it had been a terribly long time since he had such enjoyable company...And it had been even longer since he had been around someone of his own kind. He sidled over some, to give her more space on dry land if she so wished it as she moved closer.
She seemed vaguely familiar to him, though he was uncertain of where. He did have quite a few years on her, so perhaps he had seen her as a foal some years ago, when he was young and didn’t have many cares or responsibilities. “it is nice to meet you then, Dolie,” he replied warmly. He shifted, as did his wings, to get a more comfortable stance as she complimented his coat. He chuckled. “Thank you. I am not entirely sure who I got it from, honestly. I was very different from my parents,” he answered, remembering his parents easily. They had been normal, non-mutated horses who were shocked by his appearance when he was born. They had taken it very well, though. “I like to think that it ties me even closer to our beautiful islands. I have always felt more at home with the birds and tropical rainforests than anything the mainland could offer.”

"I don't remember mine all that well," Dolie said rather solemnly, trying her best to not let her gaze stray from Mako's although they had lost a bit of their luster at the thought of her parentage. In truth, they'd meant little to her. It was simply the idea that she hadn't known them that well that made her so sad.
Doing her best to relieve her eyes of sadness, Dolie perked her ears at the mention of the islands. He was right; beautiful birds belonged on the islands and there he stood. Dolie liked to think that the same went for her, though she tried not to let her unique color get to her head. Her wings shuffled a bit as she thought about the mainlands. To fly to the mainlands would be such a fabulous journey...
"I've never been there. It seems you wouldn't endorse it?" she smiled.

It was a pity, to him, since she was so young – but some horses did not handle the...differences that they had from their counterparts. He had been blessed with loving and open minded parents. Maybe she had not been so lucky, but he knew it was rude to ask such things.
The stallion chuckled, however. “It is a rather...interesting land, to say the least. Many different terrains. Each one is different from the other, unlike our dear islands,” he replied, though gave a shrug like gesture. It also moved his wings slightly, which unfurled as if to stretch before resettling to their resting position. “But there is only so much the mainland can prove. It was very lonely there.” There was a pause as his gaze fell away, drawn to something far off into the distance. His memory pulled itself to the delicate golden filly he had met and remembered learning of her ultimate demise.
“Not many mainlanders understand our customs. Most were too busy gawking at my wings or fleeing from my very sight,” he continued with a slight bitterness clinging to his voice. Yes, he remembered the looks and cruel words slung at his way. “It was a nice place, but not a place I would choose to live the rest of my life.”

Dolie nodded as Mako spoke of the mainland's shortcomings. Barely an adult, she had no reason not to believe him. She had once had desires to visit the lands, but there were always so many other things to do on the islands. Just how a horse could see it all seemed impossible. The trip alone seemed dangerous, but she knew she could handle it if she needed to. Dolie knew herself to be a strong flier, formidable even to this stallion. She was sure of it, though she'd never boast. Mako seemed weathered, experienced.
"I could see that. It sure doesn't look as vibrant as our home." Dolie looked up as she spoke; spying a bird of paradise following a female of its species, eager to show off his vivd blue hues. She smiled, her gaze falling back to Mako's special colors. She had a soft spot for colors; she had to admit.

The southern territories hadn’t been terrible, but he still felt very isolated and alone...something he had never experienced before, either, until he had left the islands over a year ago. “The snow is pretty to look upon at first, but is very nasty to deal with for prolong periods of time.”
The stallion sighed, shifting once more so that he was angled slightly away from Dolie this time. It allowed him some more space for his wings, which now drooped slightly at his sides in a relaxed position. He had been trying to reserve as much energy as he could for what he had planned next. He had given himself enough time to recover from his trip home. “However, now that I am home, I do not think I’ll leave again. The mainland was exciting for a time, but my heart will always call for Tangaroa and the clear blue waters that surround it.”

Dolie had heard of snow but only in passing. Her idea of cold was very different from those' on the mainland, that much was certain. Horses on the islands truly had it good. The lands got some heat but nothing like the desert and they very rarely experienced snow. Even when snow did reach the islands, it was concentrated in the higher grounds.
Dolie's feathery coral appendages were tightly at her sides as Mako relaxed his, speaking about the islands as his true home. She could say the same thing. Now that Wahale had fallen, Dolie was unsure about Tangaroa's condition. Risque had taken his place. She'd met the stallion before and thought he was kind enough but now she wasn't so sure. He controlled both islands; the pegasus had reservations about the roan beast now.
"I was born here on Hihiri!" she said with a bit of a smile. She loved the tiny island most of all but Tangaroa had always been near to her heart. Kahukura for some reason never truly appealed to her. "...Did you hear about Tangaroa's new king?" Dolie's voice held a hint of worry.

Her being born on Hihiri was not a surprising notion to him; many of the natives sought the safety of the tiny island to bear their children, among the other activities that happened here. Any newborn was well protected on the small island. His own son had been born on the very island, because his mother had refused to give birth on Tangaroa.
The thought of his lost son made his heart clench painfully, but he forced himself to push aside the sad thought.
His sadness was brief. His attention was piqued upon the mentioning of a new king. He had been vaguely aware of a cremello stallion leading Tangaroa, and he had never met him. Mako was too deeply burdened with grief for formalities. He had fled without any idea of how the king would handle his birthplace. Now, over a year later, there was a new king. “New king? I am afraid not, miss Dolie,” he replied, clearly puzzled. A slight frown pulled at his lips at the notion.
“Before I left, a young fellow named Wahale had taken over Tangaroa for some time. I had never gotten the chance to meet him formally before I left. There were...too many things on my mind at the time.” There was a pause, as if he mulled over this new development. He did not like this sudden change in his knowledge. “What can you tell me of this new king?”

It truly was a shame about Wahale. He'd only just slipped away and already Risque had claimed the special island. Such was the way with stallions - always thinking forward and never looking back. Although, Mako seemed to be more agreeable already than the new roan leader. Perhaps it was just Dolie's naivety that revealed such a thing to the pink pegasus. She knew she wasn't as clever or well-traveled as some. It didn't bother her... Not usually.
"I met him once. Him and his son. His name is Risque and he's big... Well, not much taller than you, anyway. He seemed very kind at the time. Oh, he's the king of Kahukura as well, if you remember him?" It was more likely that Mako didn't if he hadn't even met Wahale. It truly was a shame he hadn't had the pleasure with Wahale. He was a noble stallion. The islands were worse off without him.
The coral pegasus let her wings relax a little in Mako's company. She was beginning to feel more comfortable with him and was happy to be able to give him some information about the goings on while he was away. The purple pegasus was hard not to stare at, but then again she didn't try very hard not to. She usually shied away from admirers but somehow she couldn't see him doing the same.

Knowledge was power, for Mako; the information she was giving him would come into use. The casualness of how she spoke was lost to him, however, as she mentioned how he also ruled the only other island that could sustain a herd. Mako’s pleasant expression soured instantly, a heavy frown marring his golden face.
“What?” he spoke, disbelief and anger lacing his gravelly voice. He was not angry with her, that much was certain. “That is unheard of. The islands are meant to remain separate – separate kings of different blood. Does that fool realize what he’ll cause? Our islands are not meant to be an empire for one sole king!” The outburst came as s sudden boom and the feathers of his wings puffed suddenly, much like an angry bird would have done.
He huffed for a few moments, drawing in deep breaths to contain himself. After a few moments had passed, the feathers of his wings finally settled, and his rigid stance slowly ebbed into a slightly more relaxed one. “I apologize for my outburst, miss Dolie,” he spoke sheepishly, his golden skull dropping slightly in shame. “It was out of line...But Tangaroa is home to me. The news that it has fallen to a stallion making an empire of our precious islands is highly unsettling.” There was another pause as the deep purple pegasus took another deep breath, exhaling it slowly as he recollected himself. “I will admit, I will not stand aside and watch this continue. I hope this does not change your opinion of me, miss Dolie.”

"No need to apologize; I understand your feelings." Dolie could easily agree with Mako and she wasn't sure why. She'd known Risque longer than this pegasus but something about him made him more appealing than Risque. Perhaps it were the appendages they shared.
Dolie wanted to help this stallion all she could. He had experience written all over his face and she knew that he would keep his friends safe. It would probably be most beneficial for her to remain in his company, but she didn't want to overstay her welcome if he did not want her around. Dolie would help him until he cast her away. She knew she wasn't the strongest root from the tree but she could hold her own, right? "I'd love to help you all I can, sir."
